Estibaliz Gómez-de-Mariscal has left us to start her own group at the NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB) in Lisbon, where she leads AI and Microscopy for Biomedical Discovery.
Esti joined the lab in October 2021 as a postdoc, funded by an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship and later by an FCT CEEC contract. She trained as a mathematician and took her PhD in Mathematical Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. With us she worked on machine learning for bioimage analysis, and was a key contributor to ZeroCostDL4Mic and to much of our work on making deep learning usable at the microscope. She is also a co-creator of deepImageJ.
Her group combines machine learning, bioimage analysis, microscopy and cell biology to work out how cellular organisation and dynamics govern function in health and disease, working with groups across cancer, viral infection and neurodegeneration.
She has not gone far, since NIMSB sits in the same NOVA network as ITQB, and we expect to keep working together.
Congratulations, Esti.
